The National Longitudinal Strategy Committee

Terms of Reference

The UK National Longitudinal Strategy Committee has the following Terms of Reference:

  • to ensure adequate national consultation over strategic scientific needs for longitudinal data and over options for development of new and existing data resources;
  • to formulate quality standards for UK Longitudinal Studies and to undertake the specification, commissioning and oversight of quality reviews;
  • to review the UK investment in longitudinal data in the light of scientific research priorities, evaluations of the performance of existing studies and the interests of potential funding bodies;
  • to promote standards and good practice designed to safeguard and preserve the anonymity of the subjects of longitudinal studies and prevent the use of longitudinal data in any manner inconsistent with use for bona fide research purposes;
  • to encourage and promote engagement with, access to and use of UK longitudinal data resources for scientific research on a national and international basis; and,
  • to consider the appropriate balance of financial support as between current studies and opportunities for new, and the opportunities for seeking new funds from other sources.

These Terms of Reference may be reviewed from time to time by the National Longitudinal Strategy Committee. The Committee will report annually in February to the UK Data Forum and the ESRC Research Resources Board through the Chair of the Committee.
