ESRC Council appoints new membersTwo new members have been appointed to the ESRC Council. They took up their posts on 1 August for an initial period of three years. - Professor Judith Rees is the Deputy Director and Professor of Environmental and Resource Management of the London School of Economics. Previously she was Professor of Geography and Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Hull. She was until 1996 Chairman of the Southern Customer Service Committee of OFWAT and has acted as consultant to the World Bank and other major international clients on privatisation and regulation.
- Professor Alison Richard is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. She is widely known for her research into the evolution of complex social systems among primates. This work has taken her to Central America, northern Pakistan and in particular Madagascar. Professor Richard has been a leader of numerous professional organisations and scientific advisory councils. Since 1995, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the World Wildlife Fund, the largest privately supported international conservation organisation in the world. From April 1994 - December 2002, she served as Provost of Yale University.
