An Introduction to the Third Sector
The "Third Sector" is a term applied to non-governmental organisations which are value-driven and which principally reinvest their surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives. The third sector is often referred to as Civil Society or the Social Economy. The ESRC recognises the diversity and growing importance of the third sector and through extensive consultation has developed and enhanced its strategy for engaging with the third sector.
|
Third Sector Research
The ESRC funds a range of research investments which demonstrate the role, impact and effectiveness of third sector organisations. In addition it supports research into areas relevant to the third sector. The ESRC also funds research in collaberation with third sector stakeholders.
|
Research Resources
The ESRC makes a significant contribution to research resources, such as datasets and surveys that support the work of the third sector. These resources offer an invaluable insight into the dynamics of UK society and provide information on specific policy areas such as education, poverty, social exclusion, household consumption and personal finances. To access these and find out more, follow the links below.

Social Enterprise
|
Social enterprise is an increasingly salient strand of social and economic life, occupying a distinctive place at the interstices of market, state and society. Government recognises the potential contribution of social enterprise in delivering many of its goals, from public services and community regeneration to social inclusion and more sustainable economic growth, and the social enterprise movement itself recognises the need to better understand its contribution.

What is the ESRC?
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's leading research funding and training agency addressing economic and social concerns. We aim to provide high quality research on issues of importance to business, the public sector and government.
|
Enhancing Research Capacity
The ESRC offers a wide range of opportunities for you and your organisation to enhance your research capacity, for example developing skills for accessing, commissioning, utilising and undertaking research.
|
Events Publications and Resources
The ESRC hosts a range of events to promote social science research and tackle third sector related issues. These events also provide the opportunity for greater exchange between resesarchers and third sector stakeholders. Publications capture the research and policy implications from these events, as well as presenting findings from wider research projects.
