Current Funding Opportunities
This year we will be investing more than £63 million in funding research and developing the resources that underpin the UK's social science base. Our schemes enable individuals and groups to pursue world-class research in academic institutions and independent research centres throughout the UK. We also fund research not linked to strategic priorities but proposed by researchers, through our research grants and research fellowships schemes. All our funding investments are selected through peer review and are assessed through end of award evaluations. Below is a list of all research activities where applications are invited, with links to further information, application forms etc. For information on our responsive Research Grant Scheme, please see Research Grants. For information about postgraduate support, please go to the Postgraduate and Career Development section. There are also pages for forthcoming funding opportunities, and funding schemes related to Knowledge Transfer. If you are looking for information on funding calls which have passed their closing date, please visit the funding opportunities archive. Open funding calls (those with no fixed closing date), and "cross-Council" funding opportunities where the main information can be found on the website of one of our "sister" Research Councils, can be found below. As a result of this call the ESRC and SAMS have awarded 16 Fellowships across eleven institutions. Successful Schools are now accepting applications to undertake Fellowships. In order to strengthen European cooperation in the field of social sciences, wishing to fund high quality scientific research within their own countries, and conscious that some of the best research can be delivered by working with the best researchers internationally, ANR, DFG, ESRC and NWO are launching a common call for proposals in order to fund the best joint research projects in social sciences. The scheme will provide for the funding of integrated projects by researchers coming from more than one of the four participating countries - in any combination of two or more countries, except French-German bilateral proposals, which should be submitted to the ANR-DFG scheme in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The partner organisations will conduct a co-ordinated peer review and a single common selection process. Funding will be distributed among the partners according to the place of work of the researchers, and generally according to the funding rules of each individual agency with some exceptions detailed in the guidance. (Closing date for applications: 13th April 2010 (see full text for precise deadlines))

The call invites applicants to address a broad range of research challenges such as community ownership, energy innovation, policy, governance and social movements.
