    Global Uncertainties Research Synthesis

    This call closed on 14 January 2010. The following is for information only.

    The ESRC is pleased to welcome applications to conduct a research synthesis to uncover what the current academic literature and reports state about public attitudes to the six areas of the Global Uncertainties programme.

    It is intended that this synthesis will outline the existing data and highlight the trends and gaps in knowledge.

    Applications can be made for up to £20,000 for the synthesis, with additional funding available for outputs and dissemination.  It is anticipated the synthesis will be conducted during a period from February to May 2010.

    The Global Uncertainties programme brings together the activities of all seven UK Research Councils across a wide range of disciplines. The programme aims to explore the impacts that drivers such as poverty, health, globalisation, beliefs, and competition for resources have on security, and to generate new knowledge about how threats to security can be better predicted, detected, prevented and mitigated.

    The synthesis offers the opportunity to briefly review academic literature and public reports published on the subject of public attitudes to the key areas of the Global Uncertainties programme:

    1. ideologies and beliefs;
    2. threats to infrastructure;
    3. terrorism;
    4. cyber-security;
    5. proliferation of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) weapons and technologies; and
    6. transnational organised crime.

    The ESRC welcomes applications from researchers, normally located in a Higher Education Institutes. Researchers in non-HE institutions, for example government departments, third sector or consultant based are also invited to apply.
