Research Resources

What they are

Research resources are the foundation stones upon which our researchers can undertake work of the highest quality and relevance. These foundation stones are not just data; they also include the expertise in research methods required to utilise this data and information technologies to improve access to the ESRC's world class information resources.

Their key role is to develop the resources - data, research methods, IT and other institutional support - that underpin the health of social sciences. They operate through:

Resource Centres provide quick and easy access to key research resources such as datasets. For example, the ESRC's Economic & Social Data Service.

Resource Programmes are a group of projects aimed at developing the tools and techniques which underpin high quality research. For example, a Research Methods Programme.

How to apply

There is no fixed annual cycle for the commissioning of Resource Centres or Programmes. The Research Resources Board periodically invites proposals in key strategic areas, identified through a regular process of consultation with the academic and user communities.

When a competition is announced, calls for all applications are advertised in The Guardian and the THES and on the ESRC website under Funding Opportunities. We encourage electronic applications.
