      ESRC Targeted Fellowship Opportunities

Targeted Postdoctoral Research Fellowships: Macroeconomics Of Financial Sector Regulation - Protecting The Economy From Finance Sector Shocks And Enabling Sustainable Growth

The ESRC is launching an exciting new call to fund a cohort of one year Postdoctoral Research Fellowships as part of its Capacity Building Initiative in Macroeconomics in partnership with Her Majesty's Treasury, HMT.  The Fellows will be expected to undertake substantive new research which will address the macroeconomics of financial sector regulation and macro-prudential policy as detailed below. This will provide an excellent career development opportunity for those at a relatively early stage of their academic career who can demonstrate great potential in social science research and provide timely and important research for a pressing area of policy.

This call is distinct and separate from the standard ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowships open scheme, as in contrast it will provide the opportunity for the fellows to undertake substantive new research.

      Call for proposals

Macro-prudential policies aim to limit stress in financial systems so as to avoid output losses from financial instability. A wide range of policies impact on financial market instability, including those on tax, regulation, monetary policy, exchange rate and current account imbalances. As set out in detail in the scheme specification, the highlighted areas of interest for postdoctoral research fellowships to potentially cover are wide ranging and could include:

      • Theory
      • Method
      • Early warning
      • Macro-economics of financial sector regulation
      • Macro-prudential policies
      • Regulatory regimes
      • Wider institutional features

Note: it is not expected that fellowships will range across all of the above issues, individually or collectively. Rather, researchers should select from the above particular areas where capacity can be developed through their fellowship. The ESRC will, with its funding partner, HMT, seek to ensure a reasonable coverage of issues from the above areas, subject to the quality of proposals.

Proposals for Research Fellowships should have start dates from from January 2011. ESRC are expecting to fund up to 10 Fellows, dependent on quality.

      Submitting an application
