Countering Terrorism in Public Places
The Arts and Humanities Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, Engineering and Physical Science Research Council and National Security Advice Centre have allocated £2 million to co-fund projects emerging from the Countering Terrorism in Crowded Places Ideas Factory. The concept of the Ideas Factory is to organise interactive workshops (sand-pits) on particular topics, involving 20-30 participants. The sandpit was held over the course of a week in November 2006 and a group of researchers from a range of disciplines used this opportunity to develop long-term ideas for understanding and deterring terrorist behaviour and designing technologies and environments to combat the devastating impact of terrorist attacks. Three projects were awarded following which sandpit:
| Award Holder and Institution | Title of Research |
|---|---|
| Professor Tom Ormerod, University of Lancaster | D-ScentL raising challenges to deception attempts using data scent trails |
| Dr Jon Coaffee, University of Manchester | Resilient Design (RE-DESIGN) for Counter-terrorism: decision support for designing effective and acceptable resilient places |
| Professor Mike Press, University of Dundee | Safer Spaces: Communication design for counter terror |
