The ESRC is committed to a policy of equal opportunities for all of our applicants for employment and funding, award holders and employees. As set out in The Equality Act 2010 it is unlawful to discriminate against anyone on the grounds of a 'protected characteristic'.
As an employer we are committed to:
- eliminating unjustified discrimination
- promoting equality of opportunity and good relations between employees
- encouraging diversity throughout our workforce.
As an organisation we promote and value equality and diversity. We recognise the need to recruit employees, award holders and students from the widest possible applicant pool, and the benefits that a diverse population can bring.
The potential rewards of diversity are highlighted in the RCUK Statement on Expectations for Equality and Diversity (PDF) (external website) which sets out a commitment is required from institutions to ensuring that the best potential researchers from a diverse population are attracted into research careers. This statement has now been built on by the new RCUK Equality, Diversity and Inclusion action plan. We are working closely with the RCUK Equality and Diversity Group and are developing an implementation plan to sit alongside the RCUK Action plan with some ESRC specific actions.
