Community Engagement and Mobilisation – call for outline proposals

The ESRC in funding partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), working together under the Connected Communities Programme, invite outline proposals for two large research grants in the area of community engagement and mobilisation.

It is expected that one large grant, drawing on insights from across the social sciences and arts and humanities will be made in each of the following areas: Making of Engagement and Regulation of Engagement. Full details can be found in the call specification.

The Connected Communities Programme

Connected Communities is a cross Research Council research programme, led by the AHRC. Grants made under this Community Engagement and Mobilisation Call will be issued and managed by the ESRC, whilst working closely with the AHRC, forming part of both Councils’ contribution to the programme. The overall aim of the programme is to mobilise the potential for increasingly inter-connected, culturally diverse, communities to enhance participation, prosperity, sustainability, health and well-being by better connecting research, stakeholders and communities.

Further information on the programme can be found at:

Application process

Applicants should submit outline proposals, addressing the points detailed in the call specification, through the Research Councils’ Joint electronic Submission (Je-S) system by 16.00 on 14 December 2011.

Outline proposals costed up to £2.4 million (at 100 per cent full economic cost) per grant are invited from eligible UK Research Organisations (ROs) for research and pathways to impact work of up to five years in duration.

Further information regarding eligibility can be found on the RCUK website.

It is expected that proposals will be submitted by consortia of ROs, although applications from single eligible ROs will be permitted, if a strong case is made that the interdisciplinary requirements will be met.

Detailed guidance on the procedures for completing the outline proposal form is available in the Je-S Guidance Notes for applicants (below).

Outline proposals will be considered by a specially constituted Commissioning Panel and successful applicants will be invited to submit full proposals; details of the overall process, including a timetable, are set out in the call specification.
