Our large research investments include research centres, groups, large grants and networks.
Large investments are allocated an investment manager who acts as their main contact within ESRC. Investment directors should develop good working relationships with their investment managers and encourage ongoing dialogue, communications and engagement.
Investment managers have responsibility for:
building a good knowledge of the progress and potential of investments against agreed objectives
advising ESRC, partners and stakeholders on investment performance, and recommending when actions to review and/or improve performance are needed
ensuring investments have a concern for good performance and impact across all they do
providing knowledge and advice to investments on effective governance, knowledge exchange for impact, resource and project management
acting as guides to the resources, networks and opportunities for influence and collaboration that investments can access by being award holders
developing and participating in governance structures such as funders group and advisory groups, on a case by case basis
advising investments of their responsibilities to maintain full and accurate Researchfish records
liaising between co-funders, research investments and award holding institutions as appropriate
in some cases, calling and administering meetings between the investment director, an academic acting on behalf of the ESRC and themselves to review progress towards meeting agreed objectives
- respond to enquiries and requests for additional time to complete the research, additional funding for research and knowledge exchange for impact, substantial virements between budget headings, change of award holding institution, change of senior management associated with the large grant and other technical matters.
If you have any queries, please contact your investment manager.
Our centres, groups, programmes/initiatives, large grants and networks must submit a final report to our Reports Officer (email: firstname.lastname@example.org) three months after the end of a grant. The current final report templates for the different range of large investments are as follows:
- Centre or Group Director's Final Report Guidelines (ODT, 16Kb)
- Network Co-ordinator's Final Report Guidelines (ODT, 15Kb)
- Programme or Initiative Director's Final Report Guidelines (ODT, 16Kb)
- Large Grants Final Report Guidelines (ODT, 15Kb)
In addition, Principal Investigators, Directors and Co-ordinators have a responsibility to ensure that outcome and impact information is uploaded to the Researchfish system. You can find further information about research outcomes on the RCUK website.
Please contact your investment manager if you require further information. Our Reports Officer (email: email@example.com) will send you the form you need to complete before the end of your grant.
Evaluating large research investments
We no longer automatically evaluate all investments that we fund. We now assess grants on a more strategic basis as part of broader reviews of priority areas, schemes and thematic areas. If your grant is to be part of one of these reviews, you will be contacted in advance by our Evaluation, Strategy and Analysis team.
If your grant is selected for evaluation you will be invited to nominate outputs to include in the evaluation. We will contact grant holders when this applies, and you should not submit nominated outputs unless you are advised to do so.
