Pathways toward Participation in the Contemporary Extreme Right

  • Start date: 01 April 2009
  • End date: 31 March 2010

The emergence of extreme right parties has generated much academic interest yet we know little about who joins these organisations, how they do so and why.

The aim of the fellowship is to support some further limited research and to enable Matthew Goodwin to disseminate findings from the doctoral research which focused on activism in contemporary extreme right-wing parties.

The research consists of a semi-structured 'life history' interviews with activists and some additional archival research. In terms of dissemination, publications will include a book (to be published by Routledge under the title 'The New British Fascism: Rise of the British National Party'), journal articles and a policy report. The fellowship will also enable Goodwin to undertake additional training in quantitative methods, most notably at the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis, as well as attend a national and international conference.
