Bilateral South Africa Project: 'Compensation and aphasia: The development of assessment and intervention protocols in South Africa'
- Start date: 01 January 0001
- End date: 01 January 0001
The objective of this research project is to combine the expertise of the two applicants into a study which develops the delivery of therapy services to persons who have aphasia and who do not speak English.
South Africa has one of the highest incidences of stroke in the world. Many stroke survivors have aphasia as a consequence. Most methods of treating such a communication difficulty have been based on English or European languages. Very little is known about the effectiveness of such approaches in African languages.
Our preliminary work on cross-linguistic aspects of aphasia suggests a number of new directions which will be developed in this project in order to add to a body of theoretical knowledge and to use as the basis for intervention programmes to facilitate improved communication between people with aphasia and their conversation partners.
