Habitable Cars: The Organisation of Collective Private Transport

The dominance of the lone-driver-lone-car has produced an unsustainable and uneconomical system of mobility. This project will look at the various existing ways in which people travel together in and share cars. Much more than simply a way of getting from a to b cars have become a major setting for our working, family and leisure lives. Consequently this project will look at the activities that are organised as part of, in parallel and at odds, with travelling in the car. Using video-ethnography it will examine the details of real-time interaction inside the car and how the car is creatively utilised. It will highlight harmonies and conflicts between the demands of driving and the collective activities that take place in the space of the car in motion and at rest. From its fieldwork findings it will explore the redesign of cars and the amendment of transport policies, to better support vehicles as inhabitable places.
