My experience of being a researcher on an international project
Research is central to my work as a social worker where I am required to assess the needs of people living in different social and environmental situations. My experience of working as a social worker has been of great benefit in my role as one of the Sri Lankan Research Associates working on this ESRC funded research project into internationalising institutional and professional practices. My involvement in project research work has provided me with the opportunity to travel to areas affected by the tsunami and work among a range of survivors that include children, young people and members of the older generations. I have gathered the viewpoints of professionals and nonprofessionals who responded to the disaster and considered the work of academic institutions and professional social work practitioners based in Sri Lanka and overseas. In my presentation I will outline some of the research methods used and highlight the lessons I have learned from being involved in the research project. I will also discuss how several challenges have been overcome that include gaining consent, motivating participants to complete questionnaires and locating research participants who have moved from the area or retired since the 2004 Tsunami.
