Facilitating relationship support for 'mixed' couples and families: a collaborative approach and evaluation

  • Start date: 01 September 2010
  • End date: 31 January 2011

'Mixed' couple relationships, where each partner is from a different racial or ethnic background, are increasingly common in Britain.  Couples from different backgrounds may be unsure if any relationship problems they face are stemming from cultural difference or personal incompatibilities, and practitioners supporting personal relationships want to develop their knowledge and skills in this area.

This collaborative initiative between the Families and Social Capital Research Group at London South Bank University and the relationship support organisation One Plus One, is developing research findings into on-line relationship support resources and training models that will be of benefit to:

  • 'mixed' couples and their children;
  • the personal relationship and 'mixed' race/culture organisations supporting them;
  • other children and family-focused agencies;
  • a wide range of health and social welfare practitioners.

Evaluation of the social effects and impact of this collaborative knowledge-transfer initiative is built into the project, as is the identification of an agenda for future practice-relevant research.
