Developing and refining methods for comparative cross-national research on poverty and vulnerability: Drawing on Young Lives' and WeD's experiences

The grant will enable methodological and logistical lessons learnt from the experiences of two comparative cross-national studies of poverty and vulnerability in developing countries: Young Lives, and the Wellbeing in Developing Countries ESRC research group, to be communicated through a range of media. The outputs include an online toolkit, NCRM review paper, journal special issues, edited methodological volume, and training and capacity building.

This grant will also develop and administer a cross-nationally comparative module to capture young people's social and cultural competencies or non-cognitive skills, which could potentially be included in surveys and impact evaluations. The module will be accompanied by guidelines to enable reliable adaptation in other developing countries and there will be a qualitative component exploring emic understandings of social and cultural competencies and critically examining the concepts implicit in existing measures.

These outputs will benefit researchers and policy makers who want to monitor and understand the multidimensional effects of material poverty on the wellbeing of children and adults.
