National Centre for Research Methods - Hub (Second Term)

The Centre provides a focal point for research, training and capacity building activities, aimed at promoting a step change in the quality and range of methodological skills and techniques used by the UK social science community. The Centre has a distributed structure, with a coordinating hub at the University of Southampton and a series of nodes undertaking a programme of methodological research, training and capacity building.


This award is for a second five year term of the hub, during which it will:

  • coordinate Centre activities;
  • communicate research methods opportunities and facilitate access to on-line resources for the UK social science community;
  • assess UK needs for training and capacity building in research methods;
  • promote coordination and synergy with other training providers;
  • deliver Courses in Applied Social Surveys and a hub programme of training;
  • run a training bursary scheme;
  • run the Research Methods Festival each two years;
  • run a summer school for early career researchers;
  • assess needs for research into research methods;
  • undertake research into the social dimensions of research practice;
  • run a programme of Networks of Methodological Innovation;
  • facilitate international engagement at the forefront of research methods developments;
