The MRC, ESRC and the South African MRC are pleased to announce that they will soon be launching a joint call for research proposals through the Newton Fund focussing on Mental Health in South Africa.

The partners will be holding a workshop for researchers during the week commencing 16 October 2017 in Cape Town to explore UK-South African opportunities for collaboration in this area.

The upcoming call for proposals will focus on research into mental health of relevance to South Africa.

The funders will welcome proposals for research into mental health across the spectrum of research activities, including but not limited to basic discovery research, epidemiology, understanding the mechanisms of disease, novel detection and diagnosis, development of therapeutics/interventions and care arrangements, investigation of biological, psychological, social, environmental and/or economic determinants of disease and their interactions, public health research and the impact of different public and practitioner understandings of mental health and stigma.

Please note research projects focusing on substance misuse will be outside the scope of this call.

The call will be for proposals of a duration of up to 3 years. All projects that receive funding must be completed by 31 March 2021.

The workshop

The upcoming MRC/ESRC/SAMRC workshop will be an opportunity for UK researchers to meet researchers from South African institutions and explore opportunities for research collaboration. The agenda for the workshop will include time for networking and sharing information about UK and South African research expertise and areas of interest.
