Launched in 2014, this £20 million programme funds world class social science research that increases understanding of critical policy areas that currently constrain education systems in developing countries from translating resources into better learning for all, and ultimately positive social and economic change. Part of a broader strategic partnership between the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and ESRC, the Raising Learning Outcomes Research Programme aims to fund research focused on how complex relationships between elements of the education system, the context in which they are embedded, and the dynamics operating within the system impact on efforts to raise learning outcomes for all.

Funding is being awarded through three research calls, each focused on a different but complementary theme within the programme’s overall focus. The grants these calls fund will provide a rich source of research evidence on education in developing country contexts and The Impact Initiative is now working to support the uptake of research funded through this programme as well as the ESRC-DFID Joint Fund for Poverty Alleviation Research.
