We offer ESRC-funded researchers a one-day media training session that provides the opportunity to develop practical media skills in a safe environment.
The training is an opportunity for researchers, no matter what stage of their career, to develop their skills and feel comfortable handling media interviews. Whether a PhD student, postdoctoral researcher or senior fellow, the new practical media training session provides the guidance needed to engage the media with confidence - and plenty of opportunity to practice.
In small group settings run by journalists, the sessions are full of simulations providing each delegate with expert advice, allowing them to develop their interview technique, explain the findings of their research, and pitch their story.
The course is tailor-made for academics no matter what stage of their career, including those with little or no experience of interacting with the media.
We aim for the day to be fun as well as informative, building relationships and confidence, whilst learning new skills in a supportive environment.
What the training covers
The course will:
- show how the media can be an effective tool to disseminate research and increase its impact
- help delegates understand what journalists want from researchers, and the news angle of research findings
- provide experience of being interviewed by a broadcast journalist in different scenarios
- offer techniques for taking control of an interview and getting a message across
- explain how working with the media can support research having an impact on policy and practice.
Who runs the training?
Facilitated by the ESRC Press Office, the sessions are run by Chris Jameson and Tony Prideaux of Inside Edge Media Training and they both have extensive experience in the broadcast arena:
- Chris Jameson is a senior BBC Network producer and reporter. For much of the last decade he has worked at BBC Radio 5 Live across a range of programmes.
- Tony Prideaux is an experienced journalist, teacher, communications specialist and reporter with the BBC and in commercial radio.
The course runs for a full day from 09:30 to 16:30 with ten delegates and lunch and refreshments will be provided, together with useful course materials. Afterwards, delegates will be sent an MP3 file of their recorded interviews.
