Research Training Support Grants and Overseas Fieldwork support
The total amount of funding we provide to each Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) for the Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) and Overseas Fieldwork (OSFW) is based on a fixed amount per student per year.
We encourage DTCs to consider the total RTSG and OSFW payments as a pot from which to allocate funds. This will be based on student needs and priorities, as well as on DTC strategy and the opportunities for efficiencies provided through economies of scale. We expect that this will secure more, rather than less, funding for individual students.
It is the DTCs' responsibility to ensure that funds are used responsibly, and DTCs should ensure a process is in place for managing RTSGs and OSFWs that it is responsive to the needs of their students. Students should discuss their needs with their DTC early in their funding.
Some DTCs have been given a specified number of enhanced awards. These awards may be eligible for additional funding.
- Some economics awards may be eligible for an additional £3,000 maintenance grant per year
- Awards based within a London institution are eligible for an additional £2,000 maintenance grant per year

If you are undertaking an Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) based PhD as part of your studentship you may be eligible for additional funding. Please consult directly with your DTC.
